History!
Earlier today I attended one interesting UIUC CS talk presented by Joel (dataminr). The talk was about history of NLP. It was literally about the history nothing technical unfortunately. However, I did realize starting your talk with some brief history can help to grab the attention of audiences. B's presentation is amazing. He is one of the best presenter. He does not just deliver the technical materials even if the core contents of the class should be fairly technical. As far as I remember, he started his class with some history as a background. He spent some time introducing which papers were written and why in that day's topic. The history makes the problems shinier that more recent researchers try to solve. It pitches that this problem is historical and important. That is my interpretation why the introduction with history makes students immersed in the class.
It didn't come out of nowhere. Everything has its own history! Create or assemble it if it doesn't have one.
